NEWPORT, Ore. Mitch Zimick's hands are a blur, wrapping fishing line from his elbow to his hands into a tight coil, bound for the round, steel crab pot stacked in front of him.
Zimick is readying pots for the start of Oregon's most valuable commercial fishery, crabs, accompanied by the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd blaring from the cab of a nearby pickup truck.
With the right gear, the right conditions and an incredible amount of hard work in some of the world's roughest seas, Zimick could earn as much as $

Palmer, 54, illustrates the challenge fisheries managers face in Virginia and Maryland as they attempt to thin a bloated fleet of watermen.
Veteran crabbers can't imagine a divorce from a family business that dates back generations.
"They don't want to give up something that's been a way of life for them and their father and probably their grandfather," said Jack Travelstead, a top fisheries manager in Virginia.

The Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) in Blue Hill has two new temporary residents in its Ocean Aquarium Touch Tank, "Lena" (right) and "Betty," a blue cull.
Lena's dark brown coloration with striking orange spots give her a leopard-like appearance while Betty displays a variety of blue tones — patterns and colors relatively uncommon among the Atlantic lobster population.
Both lobsters weigh at least 1 1/4 pounds and are believed to be between 5 and 7 years old.

Nearly half of Pillar Point Harbor lay empty of boats on Monday as fishermen sped out to sea for the season's first take of Dungeness crab, those delectable bottom-dwellers that many locals consider the real "San Francisco treat."
Despite a grim outlook that local crabs were unusually small this year, which would have prevented crabbers from legally catching them, commercial fishermen found plenty of regulation-size crabs in the sea and started selling them as early as Sunday night.
